August 2012: AECOM invests in new GCC Flexpod infrastructure solution from BIOS

With approximately 45,000 employees around the world, AECOM, A Fortune 500 company serves clients in approximately 130 countries and is a leader in professional technical and management support services in the fields of transportation, facilities, environmental, energy, water and government.

BIOS have begun rolling out a AECOM’s new infrastructure that will replace the firm’s existing distributed systems, and deliver cost savings and improved performance, preparing them for future IT projects.

AECOM will establish two data centers which will provide coordinated and resilient IT services to their 12 offices across the Middle East. BIOS was engaged to implement their award-winning flexpod data center design at both locations.

The new infrastructure consists of Cisco UCS Blades, NetApp storage, full VMware virtualization and Cisco Nexus switches. The combined benefits of consolidated storage from NetApp’s de-duplication and thin provisioning with VMware’s virtualization technology will reduce the physical server count from 90 distributed across the region, to 10 in total. This will save AECOM money in a number of ways: a reduction in cabling, power and cooling required for the data center, a reduction in maintenance needs and therefore costs, a reduction in management time required to maintain this part of the network and a reduction in future capital expenditure.

Disaster recovery capabilities have been revolutionized. In the past, a critical incident would have left AECOM with significant work to recover critical systems from tape. Now with the efficiency of NetApp SnapManager and VMware Site Recovery Manager (SRM) the systems can be fully restored in a fraction of the time, saving significant work and limited availability of the systems in the meantime. Tape, a major headache for such a large organization is now almost totally redundant and only used for archiving and compliance purposes.

AECOM will also benefit from the general improvements made to their systems by running a next-generation FlexPod design: a faster network offering improved service for their end-users, reduced points of management for the IT team leading to fewer routine daily tasks, increased scalability and security of the network.

Dominic Docherty, MD of BIOS, said “This is an excellent deployment that will help AECOM to continue to remain at the top of their game. Once again we are seeing Flexpod save money for one of our customers and improve their levels of IT performance and service delivery to both their business, and their clients. It is great to see that AECOM will have a secure and stable platform upon which to build for their future IT needs.”
